G113:  Cosmic rays and free neutrinos affect U and Ar decay rates

Argument: 

Henry Morris claims that cosmic rays and free neutrinos might affect the decay rates of radioactive elements, invalidating the results.  Reversal of the earth's magnetic field could facilitate a higher rate of exposure to cosmic rays and free neutrinos

Response: 

 

  1. Nuclear fission reactors have intense neutrino radiation, but the uranium decay rate is unaffected

  2. Spacecraft powered by nuclear decay maintain the same decay rates, despite being in outer space and exposed to cosmic rays

  3. Samples used in radiometric dating are unweathered.  In other words, they are not from the surface and have not been exposed to significant amounts of cosmic rays

  4. Radiation levels high enough to affect decay rates would sterilize the planet

  5. Reversals of the earth's magnetic field by itself does not produce any cosmic rays or free neutrinos.  As the field reverses, it may weaken to the point that more cosmic rays penetrate the atmosphere.  However, since unweathered samples are used, this is irrelevant.
